Wollongong has a dynamic media ecosystem that serves the city and the wider Illawarra region. The city’s daily newspaper, The Illawarra Mercury, is published Monday through Saturday by Australian Community Media (ACM), keeping locals informed with the latest news. In addition, ACM publishes several free community newspapers, including the Advertiser, Lake Times, and the Kiama Independent, providing further news coverage to the region.
In terms of television, Wollongong is serviced by three commercial networks: WIN Television, the Seven Network, and Southern Cross 10. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) also broadcast their television services to the city. In addition to the main channels, Wollongong residents have access to a variety of digital channels such as ABC HD, 7HD, 9HD, 10 HD, and others, providing a wide array of entertainment, news, and specialized programming. Foxtel (formerly Austar) is available via satellite for subscription television.
Among the commercial networks, WIN Television offers a local WIN News broadcast each weeknight at 5:30 pm, produced directly from its headquarters in Wollongong. Southern Cross 10 airs short news and weather updates from 10 News First throughout the day, broadcast from Hobart, while The Seven Network provides local news and weather updates produced in Canberra.
Wollongong is also home to a robust radio landscape, featuring five ABC radio stations, including ABC Illawarra 97.3FM, Triple J 98.9, Radio National 1431 AM, ABC Classic FM 95.7, and Newsradio 90.9FM. In addition to ABC radio, i98FM 98.1 and WAVE FM 96.5 serve as the city’s main commercial radio stations. The city also has two community radio stations: Vox FM 106.9 and Christian broadcaster 94.1 FM.
Wollongong’s media presence continues to grow, with significant cultural recognition. In November 2021, the Monopoly board game launched a special Wollongong Edition, highlighting some of the city's most iconic attractions, such as Nan Tien Temple, Mount Keira, and the Sea Cliff Bridge, marking a fun and creative tribute to the region's heritage.
With its wide variety of media outlets, Wollongong ensures its residents are always up to date on the latest news, events, and entertainment.
